Mike Passe (North Plainfield, NJ) signed a contract
professionally for the Waterbury Spirit in Waterbury, Connecticut. The Spirit is a member of the Northern League, an independent minor league.
Passe, a shortstop at FDU, has
played third base and a few innings of
shortstop for the Spirit. In two games, he is 1-for-4 with a single and
a run batted-in.
In his senior year this past season,
Passe batted .436, smacking 13
doubles, three triples and five home runs, leading the team in all of those categories. He posted a .772 slugging percentage and a .756 on-base percentage, both team-bests for the 2000 season. His 45 RBI set the FDU single season record. He finished his career with 105 RBI, which is also tops in the FDU record book. He walked 31 times and scored 31runs. He set FDU's career record for triples by hitting his 15th this season. His 13 doubles tied FDU's single-season record and his 29 career doubles tie for first as well. Passe was named to the Freedom Conference First Team on May 4. As of the last Freedom Conference report, he was tied for the conference lead in batting average at .446. He also was tied for the lead in doubles per game at 0.41 (12 doubles in 29 games). He led the conference outright in RBI per game with 1.48 per game (43 total). His five homers placed him third in the conference in home runs per game at 0.17.
Before signing, Passe was playing for the Moonachie Braves of the Metropolitan League. He is leading the league with a .475 average at the All-Star break, and was the starting at shortstop in the league's All-Star game. The .436 average he finished the season with ranked 60th nationally in Division III.
