FDU Edged By Widener With 15 Seconds Left , 21-20

CHESTER, PA -- The FDU-Madison Devils held the Widener Pioneers scoreless for a stretch of 47 minutes and 46 seconds, but two fourth quarter passing touchdowns allowed Widener to steal a victory from FDU. The Devils are now 0-2. Widener won their opener to become 1-0. Widener's senior quarterback Mike Granato hit Jim Jones with a 21-yard touchdown pass to tie the game at 20-20 with 15 seconds remaining. Paul Ragan made the PAT, despite being partially blocked by Jose Sanchez (Egg Harbor City, NJ), to put Widener ahead 21-20. FDU quarterback Brad Bishop (Perth Amboy, NJ) completed a 17-yard pass to Mike Quigley (Manalapan, NJ) as the clock wound down to eight seconds. Bishop's final pass was a long attempt to a receiver under heavy coverage as time expired. Widener got out to a quick 7-0 lead as Granato hit Michael Coleman with a 66-yard touchdown pass on the Pioneer's first play of the game. FDU dominated the majority of the game, outscoring the Pioneers 20-0 for that stretch of 47:46. The Devils defense intercepted Granato three times on the day. Jose Sanchez picked off two passes, returning one for 31 yards and one for eight. Kevin Williams (Edison, NJ) grabbed the other, getting credit for a 19-yard return. He intercepted the ball at the FDU 44-yardline and ran it into the endzone, but the ball was brought back to the FDU 48 on a clipping penalty. FDU led 12-7 at the half. FDU had possession for 33:38 while Widener held the ball for 26:22 Mark Pollifrone (Manalapan, NJ) and Bishop combined for 241 yards of passing on 15 completions in 32 attempts. Mike Quigley led the Devils in receiving with 106 yards on nine receptions with two touchdowns. Tim Carlock (Burlington, NJ) reeled in one touchdown pass for FDU and had two catches on the day for 63 yards. Mike Kuziemski (South Amboy, NJ) made three catches for 64 yards including a long of 41. Ed Cracchiolo (Marlboro, NJ) ran for 40 yards on 18 carries. The Devils return home with a Friday night game against conference rival Wilkes University at 7:30 pm.
