Washington, DC - The Catholic University of America blew open a 14-7 game with 26 points in the final 22:18 of action to defeat the FDU football team today, 40-13, in Washington, DC. The Devils fall to 1-5 on the season, while the Cardinals, ranked number six in the nation, improve to a perfect 7-0.
Catholic quarterback Derek McGee completed a 13 yard scoring strike to wideout Mike Hunter with 7:19 to go in the third quarter to give the cardinals a 20-7 lead. Roy Shannon missed the extra point for Catholic. After a Gregg Anderson interception at the FDU 40, the Cardinals took advantage of back to back penalties on the Devils (a 15 yard personal foul and a 15 yard unsportsmanlike foul) which put the ball on the Devils seven yard line, and scored on a six yard draw by McGee to give Catholic a 27-7 lead. FDU fumbled the ensuing kickoff and was hit with another personal foul to put the Cardinals on the Devils 17 yard line. Six plays later, Andre Notarfrancesco ran in for a score form 12 yards out. Shannon was good on the kick for a 34-7 Catholic lead with 5:14 left in the game.
FDU came back on the next drive when they reached the Cardinals 14 yard line after sophomore QB Mark Pollifrone found sophomore wide receiver Mike Kuziemski on a 46 yard pass play. Pollifrone later hit sophomore wideout Mike Quigley with a two yard shovel pass for a TD to make the score 34-13, after a failed extra point try, with 3:39 left to play. Catholic began its next drive on the Devils 42 yard line after FDU's on sides kick went out of bounds. The Cardinals later scored when Dan Boyle ran in from seven yards away with 22 seconds left in the game.
The Devils opened the scoring on their first drive when senior tailback Bill Bachman broke a 37 yard TD run with 13:05 left on the first quarter clock. Junior Rich Dwyer made the kick and FDU led 7-0. Catholic took over late in the first quarter when Mike Cowan picked off Pollifrone at the Devils 32 yard line with 2:05 left in the opening period. Notarfrancesco scored four plays later on a 17 yard run with 36 seconds remaining in the quarter. Shannon missed the kick and FDU led 7-6. The teams were scoreless through the second quarter until McGee found Hunter on a one yard pass to cap a 10 play, 51 yard drive with 12 seconds remaining in the half. Notarfrancesco walked into the endzone for the conversion and the Cardinal 14-7 lead.
Pollifrone completed 14 of 37 pass es for 143 yards and a score, while being intercepted three times. Junior Fred Peters pulled in seven passes for 51 yards, while Kuziemski caught two balls for 71 yards. Bachman finished with 43 rushing yards on 11 attempts. Junior linebacker Tom Pouliot led the Devils with 15 tackles while sophomore CB Sean McDonnell made nine stops and broke up a pass.
