CNJ HOLDS ON TO DOWN FDU, 24-13


The FDU football team played a scoreless first quarter with The College of New Jersey, before the Devils scored on a 41-yard drive which resulted in a touchdown with 12:50 to play in the second quarter. Senior quarterback Mike Morgan (Hackettstown, NJ) optioned to senior tailback Oscar Bathan (Flemington, NJ) who then found sophomore receiver Mike Quigley (Manalapan, NJ)for an acrobatic TD reception from 11 yards out. FDU faced a 3-25 situation from its own 44-yard line during the drive, but Morgan hit sophomore Colin Grenon (Hackettstown, NJ) with a 27-yard pass for a first down and position on the Lions 29-yard marker. Morgan hooked up with Grenon again for 18 more yards to set up the score. Junior kicker Rich Dwyer (New Providence, NJ) converted the extra point to give the Devils a 7-0 lead.

TCNJ tied the score when it took advantage of an FDU fumble and returned it for a 19-yard touchdown with 6:49 left in the half. The kick was good and the game was tied at 7-7.

The Devils looked to reclaim their lead while driving on the Lions 16-yard line, but a TCNJ interception return that went for a 90-yard touchdown turned the game to the Lions favor. TCNJ missed the PAT, but still led 13-7 with 10:59 to go in the third quarter.

FDU was anxious to get the ball back, but fumbled the ensuing kick-off, while the Lions recovered on the Devils 25-yard line and eventually scored on a three-yard run. TCNJ failed on a rushing play for the two-point conversion and led 19-7 with 9:20 left in the third period.

FDU's bad luck continued early in the fourth quarter, when Morgan was sacked in the endzone for a safety following a bad snap from the 13-yard line. The Lions led, 21-7 with 14:54 showing in the fourth quarter. Following another Devils interception, TCNJ drove from FDU's 30-yard line, but could only come up with a 40-yard field goal with 7:16 to play in the game to take a 24-7 lead.

The Devils were looking for paydirt, driving on the Lions 38-yard line but were picked off again by the TCNJ secondary. Fortunately for FDU, the Lions fumbled and junior linebacker Mike Ortiz (Weehawken, NJ) recovered and scored from 10-yards out. The Devils extra point attempt was blocked, leaving them behind 24-13 with 1:16 to go in the final period.

FDU recoved an onside kick, but could not turn it into another score. Morgan finished the night, completing 7 of 15 passes for 103 yards, while Quigley caught three passes for 23 yards and a score. Junior linebacker Tom Pouliot (Hillsborough, NJ) made a career-high 17 tackles to go with a forced fumble and a tackle for a loss of two yards, while Ortiz finished with 11 tackles, including a sack for five yards, and a tackle for a loss of two yards. Junior strong safety J.D. Potynski (Hillsborough, NJ) picked off a pass and returned it for 18 yards as did classmate Dave Dondero (Port Richmond, NJ).
